How to play word games on TikTok Live
Word games are a natural fit for TikTok Live, because your chat is already made of words. Guess the word, word search, crosswords and word association all work as live games, as long as the whole chat can play at once. This guide covers which word games work on a stream, how to set one up, and how to keep a busy chat from turning the board into spam.
Why screen sharing a word puzzle is not enough
A common way to do word games on TikTok Live is to open a single-player word puzzle and let the chat shout suggestions while you type. It works, but you are the only one actually playing: the chat can only advise, nobody gets credit for the answer, and the best guesses are lost in the scroll.
A word game built for chat flips that around. Every viewer types their own guesses, the game checks them, puts the solver name or picture on the word they found, and keeps score. A viewer who joins halfway through can play on their very first comment. That is how the Livecade word games work.
Word games that work on TikTok Live
- Guess the word. A hidden word shows as blank tiles, and every guess that matches part of it uncovers those letters for everyone. The first viewer to type the whole word wins. That is Find the Word, a hangman for a whole chat.
- Word search. Word Hunt hides twenty words in a letter grid. Viewers type a word they spot, or call out a square like C7 and the whole word it belongs to lights up.
- Crossword. Word Cross and Word Swipe build a board of crossing words from one shared set of letters, so every solved word is a clue to the rest.
- Word association. Word Association shows one prompt and a grid of hidden associations, and the chat races to fill every slot.
- Drawing guessing. In Guess the Drawing a sketch draws itself stroke by stroke, or you draw it yourself, while the chat races to name it.
How to set up a word game on TikTok Live
- 1
Create your account
Sign up for Livecade, add your TikTok username in the dashboard and copy your overlay URL. You only do this once.
Getting started - 2
Put the overlay on your stream
Add the overlay URL as a browser source in OBS or Streamlabs, or bring it into TikTok LIVE Studio. If you go live from the TikTok app, you can run the game from your phone browser with no computer at all.
Every way to go live - 3
Choose the game and its settings
Pick a word game in the dashboard and set the language, the round or board options, a per-viewer cooldown or guess limit, and who is allowed to play.
- 4
Test it before you go live
Run the Live Simulator in your dashboard. It sends synthetic viewers, chat and gifts at the game, so you can watch words land on the board without being live.
- 5
Go live and connect
Start your TikTok Live, then start the session in Livecade so it connects to your stream. The game reads your chat as soon as the connection is live.
Start a live session - 6
Tell the chat how to play
Keep it to one line: just type any word you can see. In Word Hunt, add that they can also call out a square like C7.
Tips for running word games on a live stream
- Turn on a cooldown. A per-viewer cooldown or guess limit stops one fast typist from brute-forcing the board and leaves room for everyone else.
- Let the board do the teaching. In Word Cross and Word Swipe every solved word drops its letters into the words it crosses, so the board gets easier as the chat works through it. Point that out when a word lands.
- Unstick a quiet room. Word Hunt can flash the first letter of an unsolved word when nobody has found anything for a while. In Find the Word and Word Association a gift can uncover a letter, but never the final one, so the win still has to be typed.
- Match the language to your chat. Each game runs in ten or more languages with a word bank for each, so pick the language your viewers actually type in.
- Add your own words. Words from your niche or inside jokes from your community make a board feel like yours. In every game here except Guess the Drawing you can add your own words per language and hide the ones you do not want.
- Show who found what. Seeing their picture pinned to a word is the reward for a viewer. Leave it on, and call out good finds by name.
- Keep gift actions descriptive. If you bind gifts to game actions, describe what a gift does rather than asking for one over and over. TikTok can restrict streams for repeated, mechanical gift requests. See TikTok Live restrictions.
