How to host a trivia game on TikTok Live
Trivia is one of the most reliable formats on TikTok Live. Everyone already knows how it works, anyone can answer with a single comment, and every question gives the chat a reason to type. This guide covers the two ways to run it, how to set one up step by step, and what keeps a trivia stream going past the first ten minutes.
Two ways to run trivia on TikTok Live
The simplest way is by hand. You read a question out loud or hold it up to the camera, viewers type their answer in the chat, and you call out who got it first. It costs nothing and works well in a small room. The trouble starts as the chat speeds up: you cannot read every answer, you have to keep score in your head, and a viewer who answered right but got lost in the scroll feels ignored.
The other way is a trivia overlay: a game that sits on your stream, reads the answers straight from your chat, scores every one and keeps a leaderboard on screen. You stop being the scorekeeper and go back to being the host. That is what the Livecade trivia and quiz games do.
Pick a format
Not every quiz plays the same on a live stream. Pick the one that fits how much you want to talk and how fast your chat moves.
- A to D quiz. A question and four answers, and viewers type a letter. Trivia Time runs it on a timer so you can talk over it, while Million Quiz turns it into a prize ladder the whole chat climbs together.
- True or false. The fastest format there is: one statement and one letter to answer. True or False adds a one-line explanation after each answer, which gives you something to react to.
- Survey. Viewers guess the most popular answers rather than a fact, so nobody is locked out for not knowing something. That is Crowd Says.
- Picture rounds. Guess the Logo and Guess the Flag show an image and the chat types the name.
- Quick fire. Quick Math and Memory Maestro are short, sharp rounds for a chat that likes to compete on speed.
How to set up a trivia game on TikTok Live
- 1
Create your account
Sign up for Livecade, add your TikTok username in the dashboard and copy your overlay URL. You only do this once.
Getting started - 2
Put the overlay on your stream
Add the overlay URL as a browser source in OBS or Streamlabs, or bring it into TikTok LIVE Studio. If you go live from the TikTok app, you can run the game from your phone browser with no computer at all.
Every way to go live - 3
Choose the game and its settings
Pick a trivia game in the dashboard and set the language, the round timing and who is allowed to play, plus categories or difficulty where the game has them.
- 4
Test it before you go live
Run the Live Simulator in your dashboard. It sends synthetic viewers, chat and gifts at the game, so you can watch answers land and the leaderboard move without being live.
- 5
Go live and connect
Start your TikTok Live, then start the session in Livecade so it connects to your stream. The game reads your chat as soon as the connection is live.
Start a live session - 6
Tell the chat how to answer
Say it in the first minute and again whenever new people arrive: type A, B, C or D, or T or F. The game handles everything after that.
Tips that keep a trivia stream going
- Keep rounds short. Twenty to thirty seconds per question is enough time for a chat to answer and short enough that nobody scrolls away while waiting.
- React to the answers. The overlay does the scoring, so your job is the commentary: read out the explanation in True or False, tease the viewer who keeps getting it wrong, celebrate a streak.
- Mix the formats. A quiz you can talk over, then a ten-minute game show segment, gives the stream a shape instead of an endless run of questions.
- Make the questions yours. Questions about your niche, your community or yourself land better than general knowledge. You can add your own questions per language and hide the ones you do not want.
- Use the leaderboard. Calling out the top three every few rounds gives regulars something to chase and gives new viewers a reason to stay for one more round.
- Play in your audience language. Most of the quiz games run in up to thirteen languages, so a Spanish, Turkish or Indonesian audience can play in the language it types in.
- Keep gift actions descriptive. If you bind gifts to game actions, describe what a gift does rather than asking for one over and over. TikTok can restrict streams for repeated, mechanical gift requests. See TikTok Live restrictions.
Frequently asked questions
How do you play trivia on TikTok Live?
Show a question, let viewers answer in the chat, and score the answers. You can do it by hand in a small room, or use a trivia overlay that reads the chat, scores every answer and keeps a leaderboard on screen.
Can I host a trivia game on TikTok Live from my phone?
Yes. If you go live from the TikTok app, you can open the Livecade dashboard in your phone browser and run the game from the same phone, with no PC and no OBS. TikTok normally requires 1,000 followers to go live from mobile.
Do my viewers need an app to play?
No. Viewers answer by typing in the TikTok Live chat they already use. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.
Can I make my own trivia questions?
Yes. Million Quiz, Trivia Time, True or False, Crowd Says and Guess the Logo let you add your own questions per language and hide the ones you do not want.
How long should a trivia round be?
Twenty to thirty seconds per question suits most chats. Every Livecade quiz game lets you set its own round timing, so you can slow it down for a chatty room or speed it up for a competitive one.
Is it free?
You can start on the free plan. Some quiz games, including Million Quiz and Trivia Time, are part of Pro.
